Marrakech, the red city

Marrakech, Morocco Marrakech is the third largest city in Morocco and is located in the western part of the country. It is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world with its distinct culture, colorful markets, and historic sites.  The city is known for its ancient medina, a walled city center that dates back to the 11th century. The medina includes numerous mosques, palaces, and monuments, all of which are rich in history and culture. Visitors can wander through the narrow alleyways, explore the various souks (shops selling handcrafted goods), and visit the iconic Jemaa elFnaa square, which is filled with traditional street performers, food stalls, and snake charmers.  Marrakech also has a modern side, with many luxury hotels, restaurants, and clubs. Here visitors can enjoy the city‘s vibrant nightlife and its many cafes, bars, and clubs. There is also an extensive selection of shopping options, from designer stores and traditional markets to souvenir shops.  Marrakech is a great place to experience the culture and customs of Morocco. The city‘s markets offer a chance to buy locally made items and the many restaurants offer a variety of authentic cuisine. There are also plenty of outdoor activities to be enjoyed, such as camel rides and hot air balloon rides over the city.  Marrakech is an enchanting city that is sure to captivate visitors with its unique culture, history, and charm.

Ait Ben-Haddou (or Ait Benhaddou) is a small Moroccan town in Ouarzazate province, 190 km from Marrakech.

It is a town with traditional southern Moroccan architecture, situated on the edge of the High Atlas Mountains. It consists of a group of adobe buildings and, contrary to what you may read or hear, is not a kasbah but a ksar (fortified village). It has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The UNESCO ksar ait ben-haddou

The village of Ait Ben-Haddou is best known for having served as the backdrop to numerous films, particularly as a backdrop to Jerusalem. It has appeared in dozens of films, including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
The collective granary (Agadir) at the top of the hill is impressive and well worth the climb. Just beware of the little ‘builders’ who want to help you up the mezzanine. They are waiting for you to turn your back on them to remove the little makeshift ladder you were able to climb, and in return “demand” a bribe to go back down…..

Don’t miss Ben Haddou Mausoleum, located at the foot of the hill on the other side of town.
Before the climb, but even when you’re at the top, take in the incredible views of the surrounding area.

Dades Gorges

The extraordinary scenery of the Dades Gorge
The 25 km long Dades Gorge valley is the destination of a trip to the south of Morocco. Located halfway between Imdiazen and Boumalné, it offers fabulous landscapes where rocks and houses blend into an extraordinary setting. The enchanting landscapes of the Dades valley are a series of oases fed by the Wadi Dades, set in the middle of a vast arid area. Here, amidst the lunar landscapes of the valley, are the famous Dades Gorges, formed millions of years ago.

The Wadi Dades starts in the High Atlas and flows along a meandering 200 km long channel to join up with the Wadi Draa near Ouarzazate. On its way it meanders through the centre of the Dades Valley, creating oases of great beauty here and there.

Upstream it crosses mountainous and desert landscapes, sometimes dotted with palm groves and ancient kasbahs. Downstream it flows through a fertile valley with palm groves and picturesque villages.

The richness of the valley surprises all visitors. From blossoming almond trees to high desert cliffs, from fortified buildings to the rugged foothills of the Atlas Mountains…

Formed from the Jurassic period to the present day, the gorges of Dades offer amazing landscapes of limestone and sandstone. The bizarre geological formations that characterise this landscape contribute greatly to the mysterious and timeless atmosphere that reigns here. The huge cliffs mostly reach a height of 500 metres, and the traveller is taken to an impressive road that winds amongst the monumental ramparts.

A must-see for lovers of adventure, beautiful scenery and original photographs.

Todgha Gorges

Todga Valley
Discover the Todga Valley – an exceptional place for off-road excursions! Passing through the heart of this vast oasis, you will find breathtaking scenery of canyons and green gorges. The valley lies about fifty kilometres from the Dades Gorge and stretches between the High Atlas Mountains to the north and the Sagro Jebel to the south. There are numerous ksours and kasbahs that stretch along the wadi between date palms, and flocks of sheep and goats are the only wealth of its inhabitants.

Hiking in the Todga Gorge

Cross the gorge to the riverbank. Numerous trails lead through gorges at the foot of dizzying cliffs. During the walk you will meet Todra herders and numerous nomadic tribes. You can also take great photos of the many bird species found in this region, including eagles and pigeons.
If you are lucky enough to have a car, you can take the dirt road to Tamtetusht. This small Berber village is situated on a green plateau above the Todga Gorge: the scenery from there is breathtaking! From there, a beautiful four-wheel drive tour takes you into the heart of the Dades Valley. Heading towards M’Semrir, you’ll cross an impressive mineral landscape until you reach the Agerd N’Zegzdun Pass (2600m). From M’Semrir, you can descend the road along the bottom of the Dades Gorge to Bumaln Dades in 1 hour (60 km).
From M’Semrir you can also drive north to the village of Imilchil in the High Atlas (2200m). The drive will take about 6 hours, but when you get there, you’ll be rewarded: this region is home to landscapes that are as spectacular as they are diverse, including snow-capped mountains, lakes and forests? From here, you can take the Agoudal Road through the Tizi N’Ouano Pass, which will take you to Tingir.
Practical information
The Todga valley is located about 180km northeast of Ouarzazate. To fully enjoy the trekking in the gorges, we recommend renting a 4×4 vehicle.

Erg Chebbi Sand Dunes in Merzouga

Erg Chebbi
Erg Chebbi is only a small part of the Sahara Desert, but it offers plenty of space for adventure and a sense of solitude in the world. Also known as the Merzouga Desert, a town in south-eastern Morocco, this oasis of tranquillity stretches over a strip of land about 20 kilometres long and five kilometres wide.

Erg Chebbi is easily accessible from several nearby towns as it is connected to Merzouga by a paved road. However, to get to the dunes, one has to get off the road and follow an easily accessible path. Many tour buses already use this road until they reach the campsite, where the adventure begins.

There are several ways to explore the desert. The first is to follow this sea of sand. Travelling across the dunes by any mode of transport promises a rich experience. At each summit there is a stop to admire the panorama and scenery of Erg Chebbi.

History

Erg Chebbi is located in the Tafilalet region of southeastern Morocco, about 40km from the city of Arfourd and close to the border with Algeria. Erg Chebbi is one of the places where nomadic peoples used to live.

Rissani is the gateway to the Sahara Desert, and there are several desert tours that depart from the village. These tours take tourists to see the sand dunes, the oases, and the Berber villages.
