Is Casablanca worth visiting?

The worthwhile history of Casablanca

Before you think about this modern Moroccan city, you’ll remember the film of the same name, the great American classic of the 1940s. It tells a beautiful love story starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, which I highly recommend. The legendary success of this film is still felt today.

A visit to Casablanca gives you a chance to discover the special modern charm of the city which cannot be found anywhere else in the Kingdom. The city was heavily influenced by Europe in the 20th century and this is also reflected in the architecture. I recommend a visit to Mohammed V Square, where you can admire some Arab-Andalusian monuments and old colonial buildings.

Casablanca’s open location on the Atlantic coast meant that the city played an important role in trade. The city attracted Europeans as a port for trade between North Africa and the Old Continent. Under French colonization, White City became the first major modern port in Africa.

But I would also like to mention the different names that have been given to this city. Each of them is linked to the history of Casablanca. The metropolis was built on the site of the ancient city of Anfa. At the end of the 7th century, it was a fishing port and a very prosperous town, mainly due to its rich and fertile hinterland for grain cultivation.
Because of this privileged position, it was later attacked and occupied by invaders. The Berbers, therefore, turned the town into a fortress and named it Dar al Beida, which literally means ‘white house’. The Spanish simply translated the Arabic name and named the town Casablanca.

What is worth a visit in Casablanca

The first day in Casablanca should be devoted to sights not to be missed. As I said, Morocco’s biggest city is huge and you can’t see everything in one day. Nor will you be able to explore Casablanca on foot in one day. I recommend that you plan your visit according to your wishes. That way you will not miss any of the scenic spots that you are eager to discover in Casablanca.

Old Medina

The old medina of Casablanca is unlike in Marrakech or Fez. If you visit the old medina of Casablanca, you will discover a mostly small but very pleasant area. Let yourself get lost in the maze of narrow streets where there is no shortage of small vendors selling almost everything from clothes to ceramics, jewelry, and spices… All in all, a pleasant walk, just the way is wonderful!

Habous area

It is a bit like the old medina with all its local merchants. However, the Habous area in Casablanca stands out because it is much more charming. It is a good example of a modern medina that has retained its traditional side. There are many good restaurants in Casablanca. And if you want to take away some souvenirs from your trip to Morocco, you are sure to find original gift ideas here. You can find a Casablanca carpet here! Do you still ask if Casablanca is worth a visit? Then continue reading.

Hassan II Mosque

This is the first monument in Casablanca and the symbol of the city that I highly recommend you visit. The Hassan II Mosque is the largest mosque in Africa, the third largest in the world, and with the tallest minaret – simply incredible! Be sure to visit this impressive mosque in Casablanca as it is the only Moroccan mosque open to tourists. Even if you’re not a Muslim, you should take the opportunity to admire traditional Moroccan architecture on a guided tour.
The cost to visit is quite high, 120 DH to be exact, compared to visiting other important places in Morocco. But it’s well worth it.

Church of the Sacred Heart

Another monument that I recommend to architecture lovers is the Art Deco church. The majestic look of the Church of the Sacred Heart makes it a must-see in Casablanca. Although this former Catholic church is no longer consecrated, it attracts many visitors with the cultural events it hosts.
Do not miss a visit to the huge public garden of the Parc de la Ligue Arabe, which surrounds the building: you will enjoy some fresh air before visiting the other impressive sights of Casablanca!

The Corniche

If you visit Casablanca in one day, you cannot miss the Corniche. It’s a long pedestrian promenade along the Atlantic Ocean. And I can see why Casablanca residents love to visit this kilometer-long stretch of coastline from Hassan II Mosque to Ain Diab beach. In the evening, I recommend heading to the Corniche in Casablanca, where you can party in the charming waterfront clubs.

Mall of Morocco/ Morocco Mall

When I visited a mall in Morocco, it was not to go shopping in Casablanca. Yes, I admit that it is indeed a paradise, but this large mall (the largest in Africa!) testifies to the economic dynamism of this charming Moroccan city.

This place is worth visiting not only for its architecture and stores but also for its restaurants and various leisure activities. If you are planning a trip to Casablanca with children, you will be impressed by the musical fountain, the big ice rink, and the famous Adventureland, and why not include a wellness moment at the spa?
If I had enough time to see everything in Casablanca, I wouldn’t miss out on other equally impressive attractions. A visit to the Derb Gallef flea market is highly recommended. There is also the Royal Palace, the Museum of Moroccan Jewry, the Maarif shopping district, and finally the large abandoned racetrack Ain Diab, designed for car racing.

What to do in Casablanca?

Now you want to know what to do in Casablanca. Time in the economic capital of Morocco runs quickly. If you are looking for advice on a good trip to Casablanca, think about your main interests. Also, it’s best to plan several days so you can fully enjoy your Casablanca vacation, whether with family, loved ones, or friends. Where to go, good addresses and great plans in Casablanca, make your choice!
Visiting the beaches of Casablanca
Isn’t it always nice to enjoy a beautiful beach without the hordes of tourists? Casablanca is a sunny coastal city with many beautiful beaches. Don’t forget to rent a sun lounger at Casablanca’s public beach.

Entertainment at Sindibad Park

Apparently, there is a zoo and a wide variety of activities there. Obviously, if you come to Casablanca as a family, it is worth going there with the kids. However, you should know that this is not the only park in the city: you can find many parks with different themes.

Experience the Moroccan hammam in Casablanca

I recommend attending a wellness massage session in a Moroccan hammam; this is a must when traveling to Morocco. You will find several good addresses in the beautiful White City for a mixed hammam in Casablanca or for men only. Either way, the experience was very relaxing for me, and I especially enjoyed the exfoliating treatment with a soap scented with eucalyptus oil in the purest tradition. An experience that should definitely be repeated!

Delicious food in Casablanca

There are plenty of places to eat well and inexpensively in Casablanca. When you have the pleasure of visiting Casablanca on foot, don’t miss the opportunity to take a little gastronomic break at a charming restaurant. During busy evenings in Casablanca, the bars also offer pleasant places to eat and drink.
Walks in the forest of Bouscourt
For nature lovers or those who want a breath of fresh air in the middle of a forest, this place is a must-visit. The forest of Bouscourt covers almost 3,000 hectares. No other park in Casablanca can match its size. It is also very popular every weekend amongst Casablancers who want to exercise in nature. You’ll find plenty of activities to enjoy with your family.

Visit Sidi Abderrahman Island

Morocco’s most populous city also seems to be a milestone of happiness. Head to the small island of Sidi Abderrahman, populated by fortune tellers, some of whom have the gift of predicting the future through the palms of their hands. Believe it or not, I recommend you visit this part of Casablanca. It is a really quiet place where you will find the cuba of the marabout that gave its name to the island.

Casablanca and the area

You may never have thought about it before, but a visit to Casa should be an important stop for tourism in Morocco. The town is close to some of the most touristy spots in Morocco:

Tamaris Dar Bouazza beach is 17km from Casablanca. It is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the sun, a beautiful sandy beach, and water sports.
Mohammedia is a charming seaside town but above all is a calm and peaceful alternative to a holiday in Casablanca.
The Sahara Desert invites you to take a beautiful camel ride with a guide from Casablanca.

The Atlas Mountains are ready for some great camping to complete your holiday in Casablanca.

All in all, Casablanca city is worth a visit.
